For the past four years Melissa has devoted her time and energy to being a very strong schools advocate. She is tireless in "fighting the good fight" for the underdog and the voiceless. What gets her out of bed in the morning is ensuring that our students get the best education and opportunities to prepare them for the real world. Our students only get one shot, and their future and success is critical to our collective future as a County.
Melissa is a Pennsylvania transplant by way of Virginia, Texas, and England. She and her husband Sean are the proud parents of a 7th grader in MCPS. A former editor by trade, she served as Director of Publications for a 17,000 member medical association in Reston. She deftly managed a staff of seven and ~$2M budget, overseeing their monthly and quarterly journals and book program. Having left her professional life behind, and not one to let grass grow under her feet, Melissa quickly became heavily involved in her daughter’s PTA, serving as Treasurer, VP of Fundraising, President, and VP of Advocacy. She soon started working collectively at the County level in the 45,000 member Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA) and served as a Board Member and then Executive Officer. In 2016-2017, she served as Vice President of MCCPTA
Melissa found an unexpected passion for advocacy and all things Capital Improvement Program (CIP) when she first testified before the Board of Education with her boxing gloves years ago to “fight the good fight” for her school's revitalization project. The rest as they say is history. Melissa will tell you that the work she does gives her purpose and a reason for getting out of bed every morning. She loves overcoming challenges, solving problems, and fighting for the underdog. A Shakespearean scholar by education, she is happiest surrounded by books.
Melissa received a Master of Arts in Shakespeare Studies in 1995 from The Shakespeare Institute of The University of Birmingham, Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Her Bachelor of Arts in English with high honors was conferred in1993 by The University of Texas at Austin. She is a proud resident of the City of Gaithersburg.
